Saints fan has message off to a tee

Nearly 150 St.Helens residents have joined Saints star Paul Wellens in an online pledge to say 'no' to domestic violence.

And for one of them - avid Saints fan David Williams - it turned out to be a commitment well worth making. It was his name that was pulled out of the hat to win an exclusive tee-shirt signed by the club skipper.

David, currently serving with the armed forces, said: "It's good to see people stand up for what's right."

The online pledge was the latest initiative launched by St.Helens Council and its community safety partners to raise awareness of domestic violence.

St.Helens Council's Cabinet Member for Environmental Protection and Safer Communities, Councillor Richard McCauley said: "Domestic violence and abuse are still very much under reported in St Helens. In fact most cases are never reported.

"Often people may not even realise they are a victim. It's not always physical abuse - it can take the form of threats, harassment, controlling behaviour, financial and emotional abuse.

"That's why it's so important that we continue to raise awareness of the crime, to encourage victims to come forward and abusers to realise what they are doing is wrong. We have been so pleased to have Saints on board, supporting the campaign."
