New group aims to challenge prejudice
A new group is hoping to raise awareness of the needs of
lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender young people.
The LGBT group is for young people aged 13 to 18 - as well as
their peers and friends - and aims to challenge prejudice and
exclusion.
Run by St Helens Council's Youth Service, the new group meets
every Tuesday between 5.30pm and 7.30pm in a central location.
St Helens Council's Cabinet Member for Children and Young
People's Services, Councillor Alison Bacon said: "Often it isn't
easy for LGBT young people to find somewhere that's safe and where
they feel at ease.
"But the LGBT group is just such a place - and is an ideal venue
to meet new friends and get involved in a host of activities,
including rock climbing, canoeing, cycling and walking."
The group has plenty of other activities too, including Duke of
Edinburgh Awards, a variety of arts and crafts activities and
general support - with trained staff always on hand discuss
confidential issues.
Making the first move isn't easy. So anyone thinking of
attending the group for the first time can contact staff from the
project in advance by email - LGBTYouth@sthelens.gov.uk
