Crime is down

New figures reveal that crime and disorder has come down over the past year in St.Helens.
During the last 12 months crime overall has reduced by 10 per cent.  Other stats include:
  • A 13% reduction in all anti social behaviour reports to the police
  • An 11% reduction in violent crime
  • Rowdy and inconsiderate behaviour reports to police are down by 8 per cent
  • A 4% reduction in robbery
  • A  3% drop in non violent burglary and vehicle crime
The figures were revealed in a report of work done by St.Helens Community Safety Partnership (CSP) - a partnership between the council, police, probation service and other partners. The work of the CSP is assessed annually and each year a public survey is carried out to seek residents views surrounding crime and anti social behaviour.

The result of the latest survey reveals that residents included the following in their list of priorities - which will now form the basis of the work of the CSP in the coming year:

  • Anti social behaviour
  • Domestic Violence
  • Alcohol and drug related crime
  • Violent crime
  • Burglary
  • Vehicle crime
  • Personal robbery
  • Hate crime and
  • Business crime.
Councillor Richard McCauley, Cabinet Member for Environmental Protection and Safer Communities said:  "A new Home Office plan removes national targets on crime and the policing pledge replacing them with a mission to 'cut crime.'  The CSP will prioritise its work in line with those of our residents and businesses.  We will continue to ensure that public spaces are safe and that all  partners are working together within neighbourhoods to carry on our successes in clamping down on crime and disorder."
